A message from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' Managing Director:
With Christmas now upon us and as we move closer towards the start of a new year, I thought it was important to reflect on the current and just what we have achieved in 2020.
Each of us has experienced a wide range of emotions, from that dreaded day in March (Friday the 13th !) when we paused our operations and instructed our Captains to head north to anchor our ships in the Firth of Forth, Scotland. I can recall saying, “Not good news - but we will soon be back sailing”. The anchorage chosen being determined as economically viable and appropriate for a short duration until cruising can return. Little did we anticipate the size of the storm to follow.
We soon recognised that cruise had encountered a severe storm and that we may not look the same on the other side. Sadly, this was true, and we had to send many of our colleagues home as the ships moved to lay up and we battened down the hatches in preparation for worse to come. Concerns and rumours followed for our ships and their future.
It wasn’t long before I could give you good news that the fleet would be joined by Bolette and Borealis - but soon after the not so good news to retire Black Watch and Boudicca from service. For many of you, the ships have been your home away from home since their launch in 1996 and 2005; working to maintain these fine ladies, navigate the seven seas and provide exemplary service to our wonderful guests. These ships have served us well and have given our guests many memories that will last a lifetime, but with all things in life there comes a natural end.
Since the ships arrived in Scotland many (if not all) of you have undertaken a more flexible approach to your work, tackling each challenge as it arrives. We have decanted and stored a vast variety of items across the fleet, successfully delivered two ships to Turkey and made a fantastic start to the upgrade and maintenance of Bolette and Borealis. Whilst on-board you have worked hard to retain a COVID free environment - operating quarantine restrictions and resisting trips ashore.
The storm has yet to pass but it definitely feels that we are heading in the right direction and we will soon be through the worst of it. We have revised “back into service” dates, a hard working crew who I know will make these new ships part of the Fred. Olsen fleet and worthy to fly the Fred. Olsen flag.
As we close the year, you can be proud that you are all making a difference to the future of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. A renewed fleet, increased market share in the UK and a Brand with a BIG personality positioned to deliver first class cruising.
Let’s trim the sails and steer a course through into Spring when our ships will be ready. Ready to welcome back your colleagues at home, fly the Fred. Olsen flag and return to service.
Thank you for all of your contributions this year, keep positive and may I wish you a Happy Christmas.
